CD-i (compact disc interactive) was a multimedia system manufactured by Philips that was released in 1991. In addition to the special CD-Is, audio CDs, photo CDs and, in combination with a video cartridge, video CDs (VCD) could also be played. Despite the presence of Nintendo characters in CD-I games, CD-I never achieved the popularity that Philips hoped for. Philips developed the CD-i 4xx series, which were cheaper versions of the CD-i player, and relaunched CD-i, but now more focused as a gameconsole. This was also the heyday of "Full Motion Video" games, such as Mad Dog McCree.
